SASSA Grants & Status

Real-time payment schedules, grant amounts, and application guides for 2026/27.

Last reviewed: April 2026

SASSA provides social grants to millions of South Africans. For 2026, amounts have been adjusted for inflation, and payment cycles have been synchronized to reduce branch congestion. The SRD grant has also been formalized into the social security framework.

2026/27 Grant Amounts

Effective from April 1, 2026. These are the finalized amounts for the new financial year.

R2,240
Monthly

Older Persons (60-74)

For citizens and permanent residents over 60.

To apply, visit your nearest SASSA branch with your ID, proof of marital status, and bank statements. The grant is strictly means-tested: your income must not exceed R86,280 annually if single, and total assets must be under R1,227,600.

R2,260
Monthly

Older Persons (75+)

Additional support for senior citizens over 75.

You do not need to reapply to receive the increased amount. The system automatically triggers the higher payment in the month of your 75th birthday. Ensure your SASSA life-certificate is updated annually to prevent suspension.

R2,240
Monthly

Disability Grant

For those with permanent physical or mental disabilities.

Requires a SASSA-approved medical assessment no older than 3 months. You cannot receive this grant if you are residing in a state institution (like a hospital, prison, or state-funded care facility) full-time.

R2,260
Monthly

War Veterans

For veterans of specific global conflicts.

You must have fought in the Second World War or the Korean War. This grant is also means-tested and requires a medical certificate confirming your disability or an assessment showing you cannot support yourself.

R550
Per Child

Child Support

Primary support for lower-income parents and primary caregivers.

To apply, the child must be born in South Africa. You need the child's birth certificate and your ID. The means test threshold is currently set at R5,300 per month for a single parent.

R1,180
Per Child

Foster Child

For legally appointed foster parents with court orders.

You must have a valid court order placing the child in your care. Unlike other grants, this is NOT means-tested, meaning your personal income does not affect your eligibility.

R2,240
Per Child

Care Dependency

For children under 18 with severe disabilities requiring full-time care.

Requires a medical assessment confirming the child's severe disability. The child must require full-time, permanent home care. The grant automatically stops when the child turns 18, at which point they must apply for the adult Disability Grant.

R370
Monthly

SRD Grant

Social Relief of Distress. Requires monthly status checks.

Re-checks and income verification happen every single month. Ensure your banking details on the portal are entirely in your name, as SASSA cannot pay into third-party accounts. Appeals for declined months must be lodged within 90 days.
